About Grafton Illinois

Situated in Jersey County, Grafton is a small city with an estimated population of more than 700 residents. Lying near the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, it’s the oldest city in Jersey County. Incorporated in 1907, Grafton is also a part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and Metro-East region.

Founded by James Mason in 1832, the city’s population reached in the 1850s when 10,000 inhabitants lived in the community. However, the Great Flood of 1993 caused many residents to leave the city as many of Grafton’s structures were significantly damaged. The effects of the flood can still be seen today, as the city hasn’t yet recuperated the population it had before the flood.

The main industry in Grafton is tourism. It’s the center of bald eagle watching in the region. Main Street has a number of restaurants, some wine, antique and craft shops as well as various other attractions, making the city a popular stopping point for visitors in search of bald eagles and fall foliage color or bicyclists on the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail.

Pere Marquette Skate Park - located five miles west of the city - is the largest and most popular skate park in Illinois. When it comes to education, the city of Grafton is served by the K-12 Jersey Community Unit School District 100. Nearby universities and colleges, include Lewis and Clark Community College and Principia College.

The city receives 41 inches of rainfall and 14 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high in the summers around 88 degrees, it’s crucial to have a reliable air conditioner to effectively lower the temperature in your home. Moreover, since the mercury drops as low as 20 in the winters, you should consider investing in a heat pump to keep you and your family warm during the winter season.
