About Brighton Illinois

Situated in Macoupin and Jersey Counties, Illinois, Brighton is a village with an estimated population of more than 2,300 residents. Part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and Metro-East region, it’s renowned for its five-star historic museum and Burgoo soup - a spicy stew similar to Mulligan or Irish stew - which is served at the annual Betsey Ann Picnic.

A small community dating back to the early 19th century, William Cowman and Oliver Brown who came to the area in 1826 first settled Brighton. A post office was established in 1837 and the village was officially incorporated in 1869. It currently has one traffic signal, two grocery stores and three restaurants.

Since Brighton straddles two counties in the State of Illinois, most of the village is in Macoupin County and a small part is in Jersey County. Although the village is somewhat small - lying about 10 miles away from the major suburbs of St. Louis - it offers a suburban appearance and feel to it rather than a rural one.

Eleven public elementary schools - split between the Carlinville Community Unit School District, Southwestern Community Unit School District 9 and 7 other school districts - serve the students of the village. In addition, there are twenty middle schools as well as ten high schools serving the village of Brighton.

The village receives 40 inches of rainfall and 17 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high in the summer season around 87 degrees, it’s imperative to have a reliable air conditioner to keep you and your family comfortable during the scorching heat of summer. Furthermore, since the mercury drops as low as 20 degrees in the winter season, you should invest in a heat pump to keep your home well heated throughout the day.
