About Alton Illinois

Situated on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Alton is a city with an estimated population of more than 27,900 residents. Lying around 15 miles north of the city of St. Louis, it’s a part of the Metro-East - a region in the St. Louis metropolitan area - and is renowned for its limestone bluffs along the river and for its role before and during the American Civil War.

While Alton at one stage was growing faster than the city of St. Louis, businessmen in ‘Mound City’ formed a coalition and planned to stop its expansion by building a competing town: Grafton. Alton is great place to live, work and raise family as the city’s residents’ benefit from a cost of living that’s below the national average and the world-class protection of the Alton Fire and Police Departments.

The Alton School District and numerous parochial and private schools provide quality education to children. Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Lewis and Clark Community College and the many other universities and colleges in the St. Louis area make higher education accessible to Alton’s students.

The city’s history and location make it a popular destination for gambling, touring historic areas and antique shopping. Other attractions include fine dining and nightlife, nine golf courses - including Spencer T. Olin - as well as a large selection of guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts. Alton is also known for its natural beauty with many people visiting for hiking, horse riding and bird watching.

Alton receives 42 inches of rainfall and 12 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high in the summer months around 89 degrees, it’s imperative to have a reliable air conditioner to maintain comfortable temperatures in your home. Furthermore, since the mercury drop as low as 23 degrees in the winter months, you should consider investing in a heat pump to make sure your home is well heated during the winter season.
