About Jerseyville Illinois

Situated in Jersey County, Illinois, Jerseyville is a city with an estimated population of more than 8,500 residents. The county seat of Jersey County, it’s the county’s largest city and is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Metro-East region and Southern Illinois. The city has four sites and places that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.


Jerseyville experienced a period of urban, commercial and industrial growth after the ending of the American Civil War. The first major period of growth occurred between 1880 and 1916, and since then to the present day, the city’s growth has been substantial and steady. Several commercial structures that are now located in Courthouse Square and Downtown Historic District were built during this period.


Since the early 1990s, most of the growth has been in the southwestern and southern regions of the city, which is home to many new retail shopping centers and residential subdivision. The city has six parks that offer residents with opportunities for recreation. These parks are maintained and managed by the Jerseyville Parks and Recreation Department.


Two main highways - Illinois Route 16 and US Highway 67 - run through Jerseyville, connecting it with other major cities in Illinois. The city is served by the Jersey Community Unit School District 100, which encompasses three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. A number of private schools also serve the students in the city.
